You can all stop moaning now :). Jennie (my lovely gf) has offered to port DM to a Universal Binary when her MacBook Pro arrives. You can stop emailing me about it now *g*.
0.53 was ported not long ago by some other guy (the mach_inject author I think). In addition, someone actually picked up on the dead "Virtue" project, significantly enhancing it and - yesterday I think - made a UB version available. Too bad it makes the dock crash... ;)
So, you(r gf) are in for some competition in the virtual desktop field -- which is a damned good thing, as I've been waiting for a decent solution for VDs since I first started using OSX back in '02!
Amazing how something this useful has gone this long without being properly implemented on OSX...
And .. I ordered my mbp mid-january, still haven't seen any signs of it arriving. *moan* :(
Glad someone noticed that :) The Dock crashes because mach_inject is still broken on Intel macs (or perhaps with Universal binaries... I'm waiting for my MBP to begin working on that). In the meantime, Betrand (see the link in my previous post) is working on fixing up mach_inject for you crazy early, early adopters.
Dunno, even as the author of the Tiger version of Virtue - I still love the simplicity and "it just works"-edness of DesktopManager. Says a lot about Rich's application design skills, that :)
I hear that. I too love the "just works"-edness of DM.
To Rich: One thing I really would like to know about is Rich's plans for the future of this project. The public SVN repos hasn't been updated in something like 10 months and I get a feeling it's on that never ending todo list that everyone has. What's the word on 0.6 etc...? I'm not trying to be one of those people who gets all up in your face demanding stuff (being the main developer on 3 OS projects I know what people can be like sometimes), I'd just like to know what your thinking on DM plans currently is? :)
!! So YOU are the coding girlfriend, or, perhaps Rich is the coding boyfriend :P
He sounds like my PhD supervisor except that normally I just go and do what I was going to do regardless of what he tells me, feel free to use this ploy.
Actually I hate coding but anything to shut him up. Also, I do the same to my PhD supervisor - perhaps we all get imbued with the ability the day we enrol in grad school?
I think you might be on to something. Perhaps it is something that just naturally occurs in the subconscious given enough rest time and when you have enough people that can get up at midday to go to "work" it manifests itself. Now all it needs is a snazzy medical-like name and it could take the grad world by storm!
Will he be posting updated versions of mach_inject that I can "inject" into my current Virtue installation to test, or do you have to recompile with his updates first?
Btw, I'm supposing you read the comments on your own blog, in which case I am sure you are aware of all the other issues I have with Virtue ;)
And: DM has great potential in its development branch. Too bad I doubt it'll ever be done much more about (*wink wink*). Virtue has many ideas implemented or hinted at that I sorely miss from Windowmaker -- the whole window- and desktop inspection concept could be developed into something immensely powerful. As far as virtual desktops go, NOTHING beats Windowmaker. It's the "holy grail" of virtual desktop management IMO.
Do we know for sure there's nothing left of that from NeXT/OpenStep in OSX?

Btw, I envy you that gf. On the other hand, I'd go crazy if I had to compare myself to my gf in CS as well as every other field. Sometimes it's good to know there are things where your S.O. *is* in fact inferior to yourself... ;)
Man, you don't know how many times I wondered about writing you an email. Then I thought that you probably were already getting many and if we didn't see any news about desktopmanager it meant that you did not want to go ahead with the development.
I think 0.6 was coming along VERY well. I'm stuck with 0.53 just because of a few tiny things like the window borders, but 0.6 was going to have some neat features.
I actually use DM 0.6 every day on my PowerBook... Unfortunately, no more development done in this branch. I hope Rich will one day have to possibility to continue in the direction he had begun to take. It rocked man !

I think most of his plans involve giving me the necessary bits of code and ideas and telling me to get on with it!March 8 2006, 23:48:33 UTC 6 years ago

No, you can't do it yourself - it needs to be recompiled. Today, however, is your lucky day: http://tonyarnold.com/articles/2006/0
Send me an e-mail if it works, OK

DM 0.6 was going to rock

Please, Jenny, do something! :D

Desktop manager... 0.6?
So... is this going to see the light of day? I'm kind of confused here. Has development ceased on DM?
